Start by switching off the lights as migraine pain often increases due to the sensitivity to light and sound hence it is advisable to relax in a dark, quiet room. Then, apply hot or cold compresses to your head or neck as ice packs have a numbing effect, which may dull the sensation of pain while hot packs and heating pads can relax tense muscles.

Thirdly, sleep well. Migraines may keep you from falling asleep or wake you up at night but migraines are often triggered by a poor night’s sleep so make sure to have at least 7 hours of sleep. Establish a regular sleep hours by waking up and going to bed at the same time every day. If you nap during the day, keep it no longer than 20 to 30 minutes as it may interfere with nighttime sleep. Try to minimize distractions such as don’t watch television or take work materials to bed. This will affect your sleep.

Other than that, eat wisely as your eating habits can influence your migraines hence be consistent to eat at about the same time every day and do not skip meals as fasting increases the risk of migraines. It is also very pertinent to avoid foods that triggers your migraine such as aged cheese, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol. Besides that, exercise regularly. During physical activity, your body releases certain chemicals that can block pain signals to your brain as well as help alleviate anxiety and depression. Regular exercises can reduce migraine pain.

Next, manage your stress well. This is because stress is known to be the most common trigger of migraine. It is known that you can’t avoid daily stress, but you can keep it under control to help manage your migraine attacks. Rather than looking for ways to squeeze more activities or chores into the day, find a way to leave some things out so this will give you some time to relax and unwind.

Manage your time wisely by updating your to-do list everyday both at work and home. Separate your chores according to their urgency as this will allow you to complete the important chores first and delegate what you can. Take a break if you feel overwhelmed by doing a few slow stretches or a quick walk. Living with migraines is a daily challenge but it can be avoided with healthy lifestyle choices.
